How do Keratin Treatments to Straighten Hair work?

keratin-hair-straightening-treatment-salon-nyc-01Keratin hair straightening treatments are quickly becoming one of the most popular treatments offered at salons today because they give clients smooth, shiny, sexy hair for several months and cut back on styling time.  However, before deciding to have a keratin straightening treatment, it’s important to understand what keratin is and how the keratin treatment works.

What is Keratin?

Keratin is a basic protein building block found in the hair, nails, and skin of all mammals.  When the outer layer of keratin is damaged, as in the case of over processed/overworked hair, it affects the unprotected new cells beneath it resulting in dry hair, brittle nails, or cracked skin.

What is a Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment?

best-salon-keratin-treatments-process-explained-02Since keratin is used to straighten the hair in keratin treatments, the common misconception is that keratin is related to straight hair, however, this is not true.  During a keratin straightening treatment, a liquid solution is applied to strands of your hair to repair the damage done to the hair’s cuticle by infusing it with fortifying keratin.  The keratin hair straightening treatment, in turn, creates a barrier from heat, humidity, and environmental pollutants resulting in less frizziness & dryness and more shininess and softness!

Unlike perms or chemical relaxers, keratin hair straightening treatments are called “semi-permanent” relaxers because they don’t alter the disulphide bonds, which are bonds that give the hair elasticity and strength.  Therefore, depending on your hair’s texture, a keratin straightening treatment can last anywhere up to 3 to 4 months.

During the keratin hair straightening treatment process, that takes roughly 2 hours depending on the length of your hair, your hair stylist will start by shampooing your hair 3-4 times to remove any product build up to ensure your hair is able to absorb as much of the treatment solution as possible.  Then, they will apply a liquid keratin treatment product to your hair making sure each strand is saturated with the solution from root to tip.  After processing the treatment for about 20 minutes, your stylist will blow dry your hair on a low heat setting until completely dry.  Finally, they will section out your hair and flat iron it with a 450-degree flat iron to seal the hair cuticle with the keratin treatment product.

When it is finally time to wash your hair, it is important that you use a high-quality, sodium sulfate-free shampoo, as recommended by your stylist, to maintain the smooth texture of your keratin straightened hair.  Also, it’s advised that you avoid chlorine at all cost.  Meaning no more swimming in chlorinated swimming pools!

If you suffer from skin disorders such as psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, we advise that you check in with your dermatologist before getting a keratin hair straightening treatment.
